The Origin Story of House of Light
House of Light is a visionary art installation created by artist James Turrell. The installation is located in Naoshima, an island in the Seto Inland Sea of Japan known for its contemporary art scene. Turrell began designing House of Light in the late 1970s but it was not completed until 2013.
The inspiration for House of Light came from Turrell’s desire to create a space that would allow visitors to experience light in a new and transformative way. The artist’s interest in light stems from his perception that it is not simply a visual experience but a physical and physiological one as well.
The construction of House of Light required extensive collaboration between Turrell and a team of architects, engineers, and craftsmen. The building’s design is deceptively simple; it consists of a concrete cube with an opening in the roof. However, the opening is carefully positioned to allow specific amounts of light to enter the space at certain times of day and year, creating a unique atmosphere and experience.
Entering House of Light
Visitors to House of Light are required to make reservations in advance and must remove their shoes before entering the space. The interior is dimly lit, with a soft glow emanating from the walls and floor. The opening in the ceiling, known as a sky aperture, frames the sky above, creating an ever-changing canvas of light and color.
While inside the space, visitors are encouraged to remain still and quiet, allowing them to fully immerse themselves in the experience. The unique play of light and shadow creates a sense of weightlessness and disorientation, almost as if visitors have been transported to another dimension.
The Transformative Power of Light
One of the core ideas behind House of Light is the transformative power of light on human perception. Turrell believes that by changing the way we perceive light, we can change the way we perceive ourselves and the world around us.
For centuries, light has been associated with spiritual and religious experiences. House of Light is no exception, as it is often described as a sacred space or a place of transcendence. Visitors report experiencing feelings of peace, joy, and a deep connection to something greater than themselves while inside the space. Turrell’s use of light as a medium for spiritual exploration has influenced many contemporary artists and has helped to create a new genre of art known as “light art.”
House of Light is a masterpiece of contemporary art that has captured the imaginations of people all over the world. The installation’s power lies in its ability to create a completely unique experience for each individual who enters the space. By using light as a medium for creative expression, Turrell has created a space that transcends the boundaries of art and becomes something greater than itself. For those lucky enough to experience House of Light, it is a journey of illumination that will stay with them long after they have left the space.
